No Turning Back Now

Construction has star ted! I love our crew. They can have no idea how excited I am or that homemade chocolate chip cookies made with extreme gratitude are in their near future. The inside of the clubhouse has been gutted and the trusses have arrived. No more office Goodbye mens and womens bathrooms Today when I stopped by on my lunch break I was shocked to see how much progress they had made. Where did THAT come from?!? They used jacks to slowly raise the roof and saved the beautiful wood beams in the process. How is this even possible?  The ceiling inside is now about 12ft straight across instead of slanted. We couldn't resist sneaking in tonight and taking a look around. Really love these wood beams The new roof is under way and already it's looking more and more like a home. They plan to start framing in the master bedroom bath next week.  I feel like I'm in a car that just went from zero to 100 miles an hour with the gas pedal pinne

No Urinals For Me, Thank You

The main floor of the existing clubhouse is one large rectangular room. On one end is a small office and long countertop with cabinets. Customer service counter Office The other end has both men's and women's restrooms. We could have our own his and hers bathrooms. We decided where the current office is will become the livingroom and dining room.  A master bedroom suite will go in where the restrooms are. It's pretty hard for me to imagine this space as my future bedroom, especially with the urinals and stalls. The boys voted to keep this but I said no. The men's bathroom will become a walk in closet: The women's bathroom will become the master bath: Think we should keep both? This whole wall will come off and is where the new addition will extend out into the kitchen. I've walked through enough of my husband's flip houses to know firsthand how a space can be transformed, so for right now I'm trus

Let's Talk Logistics

We've run into some roadblocks in our construction project, starting with the roof on the clubhouse.  Our plan was to put an addition on to the northwest side of the building. Unfortunately,  the pitch of the roof isn't high enough for the addition.  After considering options, our builder has decided to remove the roof and put on a new one. Inside the building, large beautiful beams run across the ceiling. The plan is to keep these and raise the ceiling so that it will run straight across rather than at an angle. The new roof and ceiling also allows us to put in the ceiling we want with recessed lighting. Originally construction wasn't supposed to start until spring, but our builder just called and said he has a crew ready, so the project has been moved up. This is  both exciting and a bit of an unexpected problem. Based on the original plan, my husband had invested our construction money into a new flip project. So now he's quickly trying

Santa Rides a Go Kart

Image
The more time we spend here the more we realize our kids might kill themselves out here on 4 wheelers. The course is landscaped with hills, unexpected sand traps and scattered with tree stumps. Part of the allure of the course was being able to use the land for 4 wheelers,  so we had to come up with some new ideas. Santa, always concerned about safety, brought the boys Go Karts for Christmas,  and even threw in some sunshine and record high temps as an added bonus. We couldn't resist taking them out for a spin on Christmas.  I'm not gonna lie- it's pretty awesome zipping around the course in one of these. The more time we spend here as a family, the easier it is to visualize ourselves living here. Thanks Santa for a great Christmas.  Here's to 2020, a year of construction and the big move.

Time for a Little Fun

As part of our purchase we agreed to keep the course running through November to honor the course memberships,  so construction won't start until spring. That's good because we haven't figured that out yet. Tee Time. Why not? In the meantime we've been popping over to the course for walks and some family fun. Everytime I come here I am struck by the immense beauty of nature and feel alive and free. But I don't think I come close to enjoying it as much as this girl.  New hobby #2: Riding in golf carts Zoey has relished the freedom of walking with me off leash, and has taken up a new hobby- squirrel chasing. She looks innocent enough but she's actually public enemy number one when it comes to why we're moving. About a year and a half ago she crashed into me running full speed wreaking havoc on my knee. Me and stairs are still incommunicado and after much deliberation we have come to the conclusion that I need a home with a main f

Why here?

It might sound crazy, but there are really some great reasons we've made this decision. For starters, we have Nigerian Dwarf goats we took in from my inlaws. Say hello to my little friends  We decided the golf course cart barn could be converted fairly easily to a goat barn. It already has water and electric, and we can fence in the adjoining grass to make a nice field for them. The Golf Cart Barn Next, my husband flips houses and has a lot of gear to store. Not to mention his many toys- 4 wheelers, motorcycles... The course has a maintenance building complete with electric, heat, and air compression hoses run throughout it, with the potential of being one dreamy man cave. The Maintenance Building We toured every house with acreage for sale in the county, and none of them had the outbuildings, acreage and living space we needed. The existing clubhouse is a sound structure of approximately 1100 square feet with a finished walk out basement and lovely views

5 Dangerous Words: Honey I've got an idea...

About 9 months ago my husband pitched to me a wild, crazy idea. It was a Sunday night and I had just gotten home from dropping off our son at church. The conversation went something like this: ...I think we should buy a golf course. ...Are you kidding? ...Think about it. It's perfect. There's lots of land. Plenty of space for our animals. ...Um, it's a golf course. ...Just think of it as land. It comes with 2 outbuildings. ...It's land with sand traps and putting greens. It has a parking lot! ...We never have enough space for family to park. Now we will. And so we continued. He had a big plan to renovate the clubhouse into a 4 bedroom home and showed me his initial drawings.  I don't know if I was hypnotized by his enthusiatic vision or influenced by my own midlife crisis and yearning for more, but somehow he brought me on board.  So here we are. We bought a 73 acre golf course and we're moving in. This is our story.
