So We Bought a Golf Course

We've run into some roadblocks in our construction project, starting with the roof on the clubhouse.  Our plan was to put an addition on to the northwest side of the building. Unfortunately,  the pitch of the roof isn't high enough for the addition.  After considering options, our builder has decided to remove the roof and put on a new one. Inside the building, large beautiful beams run across the ceiling. The plan is to keep these and raise the ceiling so that it will run straight across rather than at an angle. The new roof and ceiling also allows us to put in the ceiling we want with recessed lighting. Originally construction wasn't supposed to start until spring, but our builder just called and said he has a crew ready, so the project has been moved up. This is  both exciting and a bit of an unexpected problem. Based on the original plan, my husband had invested our construction money into a new flip project. So now he's quickly trying

The more time we spend here the more we realize our kids might kill themselves out here on 4 wheelers. The course is landscaped with hills, unexpected sand traps and scattered with tree stumps. Part of the allure of the course was being able to use the land for 4 wheelers,  so we had to come up with some new ideas. Santa, always concerned about safety, brought the boys Go Karts for Christmas,  and even threw in some sunshine and record high temps as an added bonus. We couldn't resist taking them out for a spin on Christmas.  I'm not gonna lie- it's pretty awesome zipping around the course in one of these. The more time we spend here as a family, the easier it is to visualize ourselves living here. Thanks Santa for a great Christmas.  Here's to 2020, a year of construction and the big move.

As part of our purchase we agreed to keep the course running through November to honor the course memberships,  so construction won't start until spring. That's good because we haven't figured that out yet. Tee Time. Why not? In the meantime we've been popping over to the course for walks and some family fun. Everytime I come here I am struck by the immense beauty of nature and feel alive and free. But I don't think I come close to enjoying it as much as this girl.  New hobby #2: Riding in golf carts Zoey has relished the freedom of walking with me off leash, and has taken up a new hobby- squirrel chasing. It might sound crazy, but there are really some great reasons we've made this decision. For starters, we have Nigerian Dwarf goats we took in from my inlaws. Say hello to my little friends  We decided the golf course cart barn could be converted fairly easily to a goat barn. It already has water and electric, and we can fence in the adjoining grass to make a nice field for them. The Golf Cart Barn Next, my husband flips houses and has a lot of gear to store. Not to mention his many toys- 4 wheelers, motorcycles... The course has a maintenance building complete with electric, heat, and air compression hoses run throughout it, with the potential of being one dreamy man cave. The Maintenance Building We toured every house with acreage for sale in the county, and none of them had the outbuildings, acreage and living space we needed. About 9 months ago my husband pitched to me a wild, crazy idea. It was a Sunday night and I had just gotten home from dropping off our son at church. The conversation went something like this: ...I think we should buy a golf course. ...Are you kidding? ...Think about it. It's perfect. There's lots of land. Plenty of space for our animals. ...Um, it's a golf course. ...Just think of it as land. It comes with 2 outbuildings. ...It's land with sand traps and putting greens. It has a parking lot! ...We never have enough space for family to park. Now we will. And so we continued. He had a big plan to renovate the clubhouse into a 4 bedroom home and showed me his initial drawings.  I don't know if I was hypnotized by his enthusiatic vision or influenced by my own midlife crisis and yearning for more, but somehow he brought me on board.  So here we are. We bought a 73 acre golf course and we're moving in. This is our story.
